How to get your business cited by ChatGPT and AI search

By Deiondre, Summit AI Solutions · Updated

Q.01

What does it mean to be "cited" by AI search?

Short answer

When someone asks ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, or Perplexity a question like who's a good roofer nearby, these tools generate an answer and sometimes name specific businesses within it. Being cited means your business shows up by name in that generated answer, not just in a traditional list of links.

This is a newer, separate channel from classic search rankings. A business can rank well in Google's normal results and still never get mentioned by an AI answer, or the reverse.

Because there's no results page to scroll through, being cited or not being cited is closer to an on-off switch than a ranking position, which makes it worth understanding even though it's still a newer, less predictable channel.

Q.02

Where do AI tools actually get their information?

Short answer

These tools draw heavily on content that's already well-established online: your website, your Google Business Profile, review platforms, and any place your business is described in clear, factual language. They tend to favor sources that are specific and easy to extract facts from over vague marketing copy.

A page that clearly states what you do, where you serve, and what makes you different in plain sentences is easier for these tools to summarize accurately than a page built entirely around slogans and stock imagery.

Q.03

What can you actually do to improve your odds?

Short answer

Keep your website and Google Business Profile accurate and detailed, since inconsistent information anywhere reduces how confidently an AI tool can describe your business. Write pages that answer specific questions a customer might actually ask, in plain language, rather than only broad service descriptions.

Genuine, detailed reviews also help, since AI tools often draw on review content to understand what a business is actually like to work with, not just what it claims about itself.

  • Keep your business information accurate and consistent everywhere
  • Write pages that answer specific, real customer questions
  • Maintain a steady flow of genuine reviews
  • Avoid vague, jargon-heavy copy that's hard to summarize

Q.04

Is this the same thing as SEO?

Short answer

It overlaps heavily but isn't identical. Traditional SEO focuses on ranking your pages in a list of results a person clicks through. AI search focuses on whether a tool can confidently extract and repeat a fact about your business inside a generated answer. Good SEO fundamentals, accurate information, clear content, real reviews, support both, but AI search rewards clarity and specificity even more heavily.

This is sometimes called AEO or GEO, answer engine optimization or generative engine optimization, but the underlying work looks a lot like doing local SEO well and completely, not a separate discipline from scratch.

If you're already doing the fundamentals for local SEO, you don't need a second, parallel project labeled AEO. You need the same fundamentals done thoroughly enough that both a search engine and an AI tool can trust and use them.

Q.05

Is this worth prioritizing right now?

Short answer

AI search is a growing share of how people find local businesses, but it hasn't replaced traditional search or Google Maps, and it likely won't fully replace either soon. Treat it as one more reason to keep your online information accurate and detailed, not as a separate project competing for your attention.

If your basics, an accurate profile, real reviews, a clear website, are already solid, you're already most of the way toward being visible to AI search tools too.

Check periodically by asking an AI tool a question a customer might ask, like the kind of service you offer in your area, and see whether you're mentioned. It's a quick way to gauge where you actually stand.
